A flange is a connecting part between shafts, used to connect the ends of pipes; flanges are also used on the inlets and outlets of equipment to connect two pieces of equipment, such as a reducer flange.
A flange connection or flange joint is a detachable connection formed by a combination of three components: a flange, a gasket, and bolts, creating a sealed structure. Pipe flanges are flanges used in piping systems, while equipment flanges refer to the inlet and outlet flanges of equipment. Flanges have holes for bolts to tightly connect two flanges. A gasket seals the space between the flanges. Flanges are classified into threaded (screw) flanges, welded flanges, and clamped flanges. Flanges are always used in pairs; low-pressure pipes can use threaded flanges, while those above four kilograms of pressure use welded flanges. A sealing gasket is placed between two flange plates, then secured with bolts. The thickness of flanges varies with pressure, as do the bolts used. When connecting to pipes, water pumps and valves are also manufactured with corresponding flange shapes, also called flange connections. Any connecting part where two flat surfaces are connected and sealed using bolts around the perimeter is generally called a "flange," such as in ventilation pipe connections; these parts can be called "flange-type parts." However, this connection is only a part of a piece of equipment, such as a flange and a water pump connection; it wouldn't be correct to call the pump a "flange-type part." Smaller items, such as valves, could be called "flange-type parts".
